Cathedral of Ani

Description

The Cathedral of Ani  or The Holy Virgin Cathedral is an Armenian church completed in 1001 (or possibly 1010) by the architect Trdat in the ruined ancient Armenian capital of Ani, located in what is now the extreme eastern tip of Turkey, on the border with modern Armenia. It offers an example of a domed cruciform church within a rectangular plan, though both the dome and the drum supporting it are now missing, having collapsed in an earthquake in 1319. A further earthquake in 1988 caused the collapse of the north-west corner, and weakened all the west side.

Amazing pic!

It's so sad that Ani is now in ruins. From what I've read online, Ani used to be a very prosperous city full of churches. Apparently Ani was abandoned during the 17th century, though it was in decline long before that. Now it's completely in ruins and Armenians can't even visit it because it's in Turkey, the country that tried to wipe them out 100 years ago. For the longest time, the Turkish government ignored Ani because it was Armenian, letting it fall further into ruin. What a shame.
