Aukana is the name of conservation areas in Sri Lanka , where the remains of a Buddhist temple with a statue of Buddha , the largest statue in Sri Lanka at all. The area lies in the province of Anuradhapura .
A statue of Buddha is 13 meters high and is carved into the rock. Buddha is shrouded in monastic robes with the still well recognizable details. His right shoulder is bare, and as if beckoning hand in greeting, while the left, veiled hand gently touches the shoulder. Buddha stands on a stone pedestal, and behind him are the remains of the temple walls.
The beginnings of the statue back to fifth century in the reign of King Dathuseny.
